You may want to download the data you are using in your View in Pigment to share it or use it outside of the Application. It might also be convenient when you want to paste or transfer your data into another application outside of Pigment.

There are currently two data download format options in Pigment:

  • CSV
  • Excel (.xlsx)

You can opt in to maintain the current formatting of your data during the export. You can also select which separator your CSV file should use.

There are no permissions related to Downloading data in Pigment. Any Member who has the ability to navigate to a Block can download all data to which they have Read access.

Here we explain how to download from a widget. You can also download from a Block in a similar way. This can be a Metric, Dimension, Transactions, or Dimension List. Only Tables and Metrics can be downloaded in Excel. Dimensions and Transactions Lists can only be downloaded in CSV format.

Download from a Widget

  1. Hover over the widget.
  2. Select the menu button (...).
  3. Click Download data.
  4. (Optional) Enter a new name for the download file.
  5. Select the required export format:
    - Excel
    - CSV

The Excel option is not available if you are downloading a List.

  6. (Optional) If you select Excel as your export option, toggle on Keep existing cell and value formats to maintain your current data formatting.

  7. (Optional) If you select CSV as your export option, select the required separator for the exported CSV file. The separator automatically defaults to locale settings in your browser.

Understand Each Export Format

When downloading data from Tables or Metrics, which format should you choose for an export? What are the differences of each format?

Export to CSV file

CSV format is one of the simplest and most flexible structure formats of data that is supported by a wide range of tools, databases, and programming languages. Exporting your data in CSV can be a very convenient way to share your data if you don’t want to perform any further modifications. In this format, you will end up with raw data.

The default separator for CSV files varies based on the locale settings of your browser or operating system. In English-speaking locales, a comma (,) is typically used, while in many European countries, where a comma is used as a decimal separator, a semicolon (;) is more common.

For instance, when exporting data from a browser in the U.S., the CSV file would use commas to separate values, like this: Name, Age, Location. In contrast, a browser set to a German locale might produce: Name; Age; Location.

Export to Excel (.xlsx)

Exporting your data in Excel creates a spreadsheet that is editable and viewable in Excel. It makes your data easy to re-group, combine and re-format if you open it in Microsoft Office. As well as CSV, you can store Excel files locally on your computer so they are readily available to you at any time offline.

Export to Excel (.xlsx) not formatted

The purpose of downloading your data in this format is to have raw, unstyled data that you can then further edit in Microsoft Office.

Cells are "merged" in Excel format, and repeated in CSV and unformatted Excel format.

Export Examples

The following examples illustrate how data looks in Pigment, and how it looks when exported to each of the three formats. Notice how ‘Actuals’ are repeated in each row when the data is exported in the CSV and unformatted Excel formats. However ‘Actuals’ are merged when downloaded in Excel.

Quick question:

What type user/licences are allowed to download data that way? also contributors and viewers?
Thanks

Hi Jose,

Thanks for your question!

Whenever a user has a right to read data, he can download it.

Licence type doesn’t matter as long as in the 'Role' Dimension List in the Security folder, the data access rights are set as allowed to 'Read'.

Hope this helps.

You can find more information about the access rights in this article

Best,

Katrina

Hi Katrina, are Pigment planing to activate the option for downloading Dimensions and Transactions Lists in excel? It’s really important for us.
