Introduction:

Hello Pigmenteers! I’m Tom Gilbert (@tgilbert in the community), and I’m the Enterprise Planning Platform Lead at Celonis, based in New York.

My day to day is really focused on managing the Pigment platform. That includes the long term roadmap and thinking about where we want to take the platform, but also the day to day work of building new enhancements, troubleshooting bugs, and supporting and enabling our users.

Can you tell us a little about your career journey?

I started my career out of college at an EPM consulting company, where I worked on implementations and helped different companies build out their EPM platforms.

I enjoyed that work, but I became interested in seeing those projects through for longer. In consulting, you often work on a shorter implementation and then move on. I wanted the opportunity to work internally at a company and think more about the long term strategy of a platform.

That led me to join the finance team at Celonis. Now I get to think about where our platform is today and where we want to take it over the next three to five years.

Back in college, I was considering a few different career paths. One was more focused on finance, while another was closer to computer science. EPM ended up giving me the opportunity to combine both interests. I can do some light coding and technical work while still using my finance knowledge, which is something I really enjoy about the space.

Can you tell us a little about your career journey?

Really focus on understanding your process and the architecture you want to design within the model.

Over time, you’ll learn the syntax, formulas, and technical details. The underlying architecture and workflow you’re building are much more difficult to change later.

Spending a little more time upfront thinking through those pieces will pay dividends in the long run.
