Best way to set up conditional formatting for sparse metrics

Hi,

I have a metric with many dimensions. I’d like to apply conditional formatting so the forecast months appear in yellow. However, it seems like the metric used to set up the conditional formatting must be populated for every level of granularity, even if it only changes based on the Month dimension.

Am I missing something here?

Hi,

This is Keegan from Pigment Support!

You’re right to consider sparsity here. If your forecast periods follow the Month Period Type property, you can try formatting the Forecast group directly in the View, without creating a formatting Metric at every intersection:

  1. Add Month > Period Type to the View’s pivot.
  2. Right-click the Forecast header.
  3. Apply a yellow background to the cells.

This uses static formatting on the Forecast group, so the formatting can follow months as their Period Type changes.

If you use conditional formatting based on another Metric instead, the Metrics can have different Dimensions.

However, for Dimensions missing from either Metric, the rule applies at the total level, with both totals displayed. That may not give you the detail-level formatting you need.

Hope that helps!

Hi Keegan - thanks for the response.

The problem is that the “Period Type” changes based on another dimension, so unfortunately using a property of the Month dimension wouldn’t work.

Here’s an example of the issue I’m facing:

Metric Name: Amount
Dimensions: Month, Version, Segment, Product

I’d like to apply formatting to every forecast month. This seems to require a Conditional Formatting metric with all 4 dimensions, even though Segment and Product do not affect the formatting logic. When the Segment/Product lists get very large, this dense metric breaks.

Is there a way around this? I’m curious why the formatting metric needs all the same dimensions if they don’t actually impact the logic. Thanks!
