I have set up item variables based on snapshots of my model. is it possible for my calculated items to automatically change based on which item is selected in the board filters?

If you set up the variable to allow changes, then it will be displayed as a page selector and you can change it. The calculated item will repsect the change of the page selector, and recalculate accordingly.
