I want to set up a variable item that i can use as a default filter on my Boards.
I want it to default to the local currency of a selected subsidiary.

I have tried creating a mapping metric, dimensioned by Subsidiary and with the data type = currency dimension.
I have also tried it as a boolean with subsidiary and currency as dimensions.

Neither are available for selection when trying to set up the variable.

How can i get this to work?

Hi there,

Is the mapping between Subsidiary and Currency a one-to-one relationship? If so, you could add Currency as a property of your Subsidiary dimension and manage the mapping directly within that dimension. You could then use this property as a page selector: Subsidiary>Currency. This way, when a Subsidiary is selected, only the corresponding Currency would appear in the dropdown.

Additionally, is the Currency dimension placed in rows or columns? If your goal is to display only the relevant currency when selecting a Subsidiary in the page selector, you could add your boolean mapping metric to the table, hide it from view, and use it as a filter in the view settings, filtering on values equal to TRUE.

Let me know if this matches what you’re trying to achieve.

Thanks!

Thanks Julie but i don’t think this is quite what we’re looking for.

We currently have the ability to have our board show our data (e.g. P&L) in any currency using the page selector at the top, but we want to have the currency default to the local currency when the subsidiary is changed in the dropdown.

i.e. select our UK sub and currency default will be GBP, but maintaining the ability to view in other currencies if needed,

Hi @MKSMPB

Unfortunately, it is not currently possible for one page selector to dynamically influence the default selection of another. I would strongly encourage you to submit a Product Idea outlining your specific use case, as this would help the Product team better evaluate the need and potential impact.

Thank you!

Hi,

Alternatively, you can imagine making a member-based variable, based on the user’s country/responsibility. Assuming probably users have a preference based on how they consume data.

Hi MKSMPB,

It’s not a good practice to have the Currency dimension in reports. For the reason you are seeing here and also for volumetric considerations.

We typically have a Conversion dimension containing the following: Local Currency/Group Currency/Local Reporting Currency

This way you can default it easily to the right numbers
