Question

Board selectors that can select "dimensions" instead of dimension list items

Hello,

I am building an app that reports on data with varying time lengths. So a user may want to see their boards either quarterly, half -yearly or yearly.

Quarter, half year and yearly are all dimensions within our Pigment Datahub, and they have defined relationships between them i.e. Month → Quarter → Half year → Year are all connected to each other.

Currently all three dimensions are used as selectors on my boards:

But I want a user to be able to land on a “Time Period Selector” board and:

  1. Choose either the Quarterly, Half Yearly or Yearly reporting frequency
  2. The chosen dimension (conditional on what the user has selected) is then the only available selector throughout all the other boards in the report, rather than having all three dimensions available as selectors

I have mocked up a “Period Selector” board to show what I am looking for. It uses a dummy dimension called “Time View” which has the list items Quarterly, Half-Yearly and Annually, it is not currently connected to the Quarterly, Half Yearly or Yearly dimensions as I can’t see how:

If quarterly was selected then the board would then only show Quarterly as a selector, rather than all three (Quarterly, Half Yearly or Yearly).

Is this possible to do? I have only ever seen selectors on boards that reference dimension items, rather than dimensions themselves.

Thank you

Hey Phil!

Apologies for the long delay here - it was originally posted into the Customer Lounge and alongside majority of us being at our company offsite, it went unnoticed for too long 🙁

We’ve moved it to the “Questions & Conversations” section of our Community which fits this type of question better! We’ll ask internally to get eyes on this and an answer to you!

Hi Phil,

This is an interesting case. You could very well submit an idea for this situation so our Product team can explore how to achieve this within the product.

Right now, I don’t believe we can achieve this using a dimension.
The best solution in my opinion is to duplicate the board, one per time period, change the view according to the period and link each board with action buttons at the top.

You can also leverage dynamic variables for your time dimensions in order to have quick filtered items in your page selectors.

Examples:

  • Month: Current Month, QTD, YTD, YTG
  • Quarter: Current Quarter, Last + Current Quarter
  • Year: Current Year, Last Year

Hope this helps.
Thanks,
